What is carbon neutral

Climate change is a global problem facing mankind. With the emission of carbon dioxide in various countries, greenhouse gases have soared, posing a threat to life systems. In this context, countries around the world reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the form of a global agreement, and my country has therefore proposed carbon peak and carbon neutral goals. Carbon emissions are closely related to economic development, and economic development requires energy consumption. Shao Min, Dean of the Institute of Environment and Climate Research of Jinan University, introduced that "carbon peak" is our country’s commitment to no longer increase carbon dioxide emissions before 2030, and then gradually reduce it after reaching the peak; and by 2060, target emissions All the carbon dioxide in the country must be offset by tree planting, energy saving and emission reduction. This is "carbon neutrality."

According to the IPCC Special Report "Global Warming 1.5°C", carbon-neutral is defined as follows: When an organization's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in a year are balanced by the application of carbon dioxide removal technology, it is carbon neutral or net zero carbon dioxide emissions. So, what is the connection and difference between “carbon neutral” and “net-zero emission” and “climate-neutral” that often appear in climate news? The definition of net zero emissions: When an organization's annual greenhouse gas (CO2-e, measured in carbon dioxide equivalent) emissions and greenhouse gas removals balance, it is net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

The definition of climate neutrality: When an organization's activities have no net impact on the climate system, it is climate neutral. In the definition of climate neutrality, regional or local geophysical effects must also be considered, such as radiation effects (such as radiation effects from airplane condensation trajectories). All in all, the carbon neutral target is only related to carbon dioxide, while the "net zero" target includes all greenhouse gases, and the "climate neutral" target also considers other effects, such as radiation effects. For most companies, carbon neutrality, net zero emissions, and climate neutrality mean the same thing. If an organization mainly emits carbon dioxide, it does not make much difference to use the terms "carbon neutral", "net zero emissions" or "climate neutral".

In addition, for most sectors, net zero emissions and climate neutrality are the same, because the most important climate impact is the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. However, some sectors, such as the aviation industry, should also consider other factors that are not the effects of carbon dioxide radiation.
