National Carbon Neutrality Targets 2

Germany Target date: 2050 Nature of commitment: The law stipulates that Germany's first major climate law will come into effect in December 2019. The introduction of this law states that Germany will "pursue" greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050.

Hungary Target date: 2050 Nature of commitment: The law stipulates that Hungary shall commit to climate neutrality by 2050 in the climate law passed in June 2020.

Iceland Target date: 2040 Nature of commitment: The policy declares that Iceland has obtained almost carbon-free electricity and heating from geothermal and hydroelectric power generation. The strategy announced in 2018 focuses on phasing out fossil fuels in the transportation industry, planting trees, and restoring wetlands.

Ireland Target date: 2050 Current status: The ruling party alliance agreement. In a joint agreement finalized in June 2020, the three parties agreed to legally set a net zero emission target for 2050, which will reduce emissions by 7% each year for the next ten years. .

Japan Target date: "As soon as possible in the second half of this century" Nature of commitment: Policy announcement The Japanese government approved a climate strategy before hosting the G20 summit in June 2019, focusing on carbon capture, utilization and storage , And the development of hydrogen as a source of clean fuel. It is worth noting that the plan to phase out coal has not yet been issued. It is estimated that by 2030, coal will still supply a quarter of the country's electricity.

Marshall Islands Target date: 2050 Nature of commitment: voluntary emission reduction commitments submitted to the United Nations The latest report submitted to the United Nations in September 2018 stated the desire to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, although there is no specific policy to achieve this goal.

New Zealand Target date: 2050 Nature of commitment: The law stipulates that the largest source of emissions in New Zealand is agriculture. A law passed in November 2019 set a net zero goal for all greenhouse gases except biomethane (mainly from sheep and cattle). By 2050, biomethane will be reduced by 24-47% from 2017.

Norway Target Date: 2050/2030 Nature of Commitment: The policy declares that the Norwegian Parliament is one of the first parliaments in the world to discuss climate neutral issues, and strives to achieve carbon neutrality through international offsets by 2030 and domestic carbon neutrality by 2050. But this commitment is only a policy intention, not a binding climate law.

Portugal Target Date: 2050 Nature of Commitment: Policy Statement Portugal released a road map to achieve net zero emissions in December 2018, outlining strategies for energy, transportation, waste, agriculture and forests. Portugal is one of the member states calling on the European Union to pass the 2050 net zero emission target.

Singapore Target date: "Achieve as soon as possible in the second half of this century" Nature of commitment: Submit to the United Nations Like Japan, Singapore also avoids committing to a clear decarbonization date, but regards it as the final goal of the long-term strategy submitted to the United Nations in March 2020. By 2040, diesel locomotives will be phased out and replaced by electric vehicles.

Slovakia Target date: 2050 Nature of commitment: Submitted to the United Nations Slovakia is one of the first EU member states to formally submit a long-term strategy to the United Nations. The goal is to achieve "climate neutrality" by 2050.

South Africa Target date: 2050 Nature of commitment: Policy announcement The South African government announced the Low Emission Development Strategy (LEDS) in September 2020, outlining the goal of becoming a net-zero economy by 2050.

Korea Target date: 2050 Nature of commitment: The policy declares that South Korea’s ruling Democratic Party will return to power by an overwhelming advantage in the April 2020 elections. Voters support its "Green New Deal", which is to decarbonize the economy by 2050 and end coal financing. This is the first such commitment in East Asia, and it is also a major event for the world's seventh largest carbon dioxide emitter. About 40% of South Korea's electricity comes from coal, and it has always been a major financing country for overseas coal power plants.

Spain Target Date: 2050 Status of Commitment: Draft Law The Spanish government submitted a draft climate framework bill to Parliament in May 2020, established a committee to monitor progress, and immediately banned new coal, oil and gas exploration permits.

Sweden Target date: 2045 Nature of commitment: The law stipulates that Sweden has set a net zero emission target in 2017. According to the Paris Agreement, the timetable for carbon neutrality has been advanced by five years. At least 85% of emission reductions must be achieved through domestic policies, and the rest will be made up by international emission reductions.

Switzerland Target date: 2050 Nature of commitment: Policy announcement The Swiss Federal Council announced on August 28, 2019 that it intends to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, deepening the 70-85% reduction target stipulated in the Paris Agreement. Parliament is revising its climate legislation, including the development of technologies to remove carbon dioxide from the air (one of the most advanced pilot projects in this field in Switzerland).

United Kingdom Target date: 2050 Nature of commitment: The law stipulates that the United Kingdom has passed an emission reduction framework law in 2008, so setting a net zero emission target is simple, just change 80% to 100%. The Parliament passed the amendment on June 27, 2019. The Scottish Parliament is formulating a bill to achieve net zero emissions by 2045, which is based on Scotland's strong renewable energy resources and the ability to store carbon dioxide in the depleted North Sea oil fields.

Uruguay Target date: 2030 Nature of commitment: The voluntary emission reduction commitments under the Paris Agreement are based on Uruguay’s national report submitted to the United Nations Convention, plus policies to reduce beef farming, waste and energy emissions. It is expected that by 2030, the country will become Net carbon sink country.
